The Energy sector rally on Friday, October 16 showed complete breadth but thin underlying quality. Across the sector, 100.0% of companies advanced, helping the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund that tracks the sector under the ticker XLE, close +2.5% at $68.24. Gains were led by Targa Resources Inc, which finished +4.3%, and Diamondback Energy Inc, which closed +4.3%. Even the session's slowest performer, Valero Energy Corporation, closed +0.2%. Yet only 23.0% of the fund's graded holdings earn an A or B quality grade from EasyAlpha. The spark behind the advance came from commodity desks, where crude oil jumped as tankers faced escalating attacks around the Strait of Hormuz and an 8.6-million-barrel inventory draw drained domestic stockpiles.
Physical supply anxieties broadened as refinery strikes disrupted Russian diesel exports. Simultaneously, American crude benchmarks crossed $100 a barrel. That commodity spike provided an immediate tailwind across exploration, refining, and pipeline businesses, allowing Energy to stand out on a session where 6 of the 11 sectors rose across the wider market.
Inside the sector, the rally reached every single holding. The cap-weighted sector finished +2.5%, while an equal-weighted measure of the same constituents moved +2.7%. When an equal-weighted measure finishes ahead of the cap-weighted figure, smaller operators and specialized service firms do more of the work than the largest integrated producers. That pattern was evident throughout the day as midsize exploration and midstream names set the pace.
EasyAlpha's data shows the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund building short-term momentum, with XLE at +5.8% over the past month and +19.7% across the past 100 sessions. Over longer horizons, the fund stands at +23.9% over the past six months, even though it remains -20.0% over the past twelve months.
EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers from A to E. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Because only 23.0% of the fund's weight sits in those top two tiers, the vehicle remains heavily weighted toward companies in middle and lower tiers.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
