  • Our read: Allegion carried an A grade into the session, indicating excellent quality compared with its Industrials peers in the S&P 500. The read rests on strong growth, while earnings quality remains the key watch item in its file.
  • The day: The shares surged 11.0% to close at $176.42 after third-quarter profit beat expectations and management raised full-year earnings guidance.
  • Watching: The next quarterly earnings reporting date following the Thursday, October 22 release, alongside whether earnings quality improves as full-year guidance unfolds.

Allegion recorded its largest single-day gain of the past year on Thursday, surging 11.0% to finish at $176.42. Trading volume was heavy, running at 2.1x its 20-session average. The rally came after the security products manufacturer topped third-quarter earnings expectations and raised its full-year profit outlook.

The quarter showed broad gains across the business, where third-quarter net revenue increased alongside higher net income and diluted earnings. In regulatory filings, the company confirmed that operating income and operating margin expanded over the prior year.

The company brought that fundamental strength into the session. Allegion carried an A grade into Thursday's trading, placing it in the top tier of Industrials companies in the S&P 500 based on data evaluated before the open. Across historical data, companies graded A or B have exhibited stronger business fundamentals and a lower risk of severe drawdowns than those graded D or E. On its financial statements, the company reports 15.4% profit margins and a return on equity of 33.7%.

Yet Thursday's jump leaves the shares trading with little margin for error. The move pushed the stock to within 2.5% of its 52-week high of $181.03, leaving it 42.2% above its 52-week low of $124.05. At $176.42, Allegion now trades just 0.9% below the average Wall Street target of $178.00. With only 45.5% of the 11 analysts covering the stock rating it a buy, market expectations have largely caught up to the business. Moreover, EasyAlpha identifies earnings quality as the company's primary vulnerability.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
