The Communication Services sector split sharply on Thursday, October 29, as strong member breadth was overshadowed by steep losses in its largest component. Inside the Communication Services Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLC), an exchange-traded fund that tracks the sector, EasyAlpha grades 85.9% of the portfolio, with 24.4% holding quality grades of A or B. Across the S&P 500, 73.7% of the sector's companies closed positive, and an equal-weighted measure of the group registered +0.6%. The cap-weighted sector, by contrast, ended -6.3%, driven lower by Alphabet Inc Class C, which finished -12.3%. Alphabet stumbled after third-quarter results missed Wall Street expectations on earnings per share, weighed down by slowing advertising growth across both Google Search and YouTube.
Alphabet's drop centered on mounting anxiety over capital spending. The company reported quarterly capital expenditures above $51 billion, spurring heavy cash burn as it built out artificial intelligence infrastructure. Results were further weighed down by expectations for significantly higher capital expenditures in 2027. Because Alphabet commands an outsized share of market-cap benchmarks, the selloff quickly weighed on broader equity gauges and obscured an otherwise stable session for communication stocks.
That stability was visible across the rest of the sector. Across the wider market, 8 of the 11 sectors rose, and smaller communication names followed that trend. Omnicom Group Inc closed +4.1%, while EchoStar Corporation ended +3.6%. Most sector members held firm throughout the session, showing that the day's weakness was concentrated in its largest component rather than an industry-wide contraction.
For investors using XLC as their vehicle, the fund closed at $101.21, recording -1.9% for the session. While XLC carries a low expense ratio of 0.08%, low operating costs do not shield against broader sector drawdowns. Over the past twelve months, XLC sits at -13.0%.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
