The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund that tracks the sector under the ticker XLP, closed +1.5% on Thursday, October 29. Companies graded A or B account for 45.8% of the fund's graded portfolio, representing businesses that have stronger fundamentals and historically carry lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Inside the sector, 88.2% of member stocks advanced, while the cap-weighted sector finished +1.7% compared with +1.1% on an equal-weighted basis. That gap shows the sector's largest heavyweights pulled more than their share of the load. Leading that push was Altria Group, which ended +5.1% after raising its full-year earnings outlook and expanding its share repurchase authorization by $1 billion.

Beyond tobacco, Walmart rolled out a holiday meal basket priced at $35 to feed ten people, cutting costs 12% below last year's level. The company designed the meal basket to feed ten people at $3.50 per person to help families celebrate throughout the holiday season.

In discount retail, pricing transparency drew legal scrutiny. The Federal Trade Commission and 20 state attorneys general filed a lawsuit against Dollar General alleging systematic overcharging, claiming register prices repeatedly exceeded shelf tags across thousands of locations. Separately, Dollar Tree Inc finished +3.8%.

Not all holdings participated in the sector's gains. Agribusiness giant Bunge Global SA fell to the bottom of the group, finishing -4.8%. Our sources show no reported company-specific catalyst for the drop.

The sector's advance came during a positive broader trading day in which 8 of the 11 sectors rose. Broader equity markets also saw gains across most individual stocks despite index pressure from select technology declines.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
