  • Our read: EasyAlpha grades American Tower Corp an A against its real estate peers in the S&P 500, representing excellent quality among the strongest companies in its industry.
  • The day: Shares surged 9.3% to close at $182.23, marking their largest daily gain of the past year after an outside spectrum transaction raised leasing expectations.
  • Watching: Third-quarter financial results scheduled for Tuesday, October 27.

On Friday, American Tower shares rallied 9.3% to finish at $182.23 on trading volume that reached 3.0x its 20-session average. The sharp advance followed news that SpaceX agreed to buy a nationwide portfolio of 800-megahertz wireless licenses. The transaction is valued at around $8 billion for the spectrum assets.

The trading split across communications stocks highlighted the shift in market expectations. Shares of established wireless carriers fell as investors weighed potential competition from satellite mobile services. At the same time, physical infrastructure providers climbed because mobile networks still require equipment on the ground. Any network deployment remains in early stages, making it premature to know how the network will be built.

EasyAlpha evaluates companies against their industry peers, assessing financial results, trading behavior, and market signals. American Tower entered the session graded A, the top quality tier for real estate companies in the S&P 500. Historically, companies graded A or B have possessed sturdier underlying fundamentals and carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than those graded D or E.

The company generates a 31.1% profit margin and an equity return of 33.9%. American Tower also supports a 4.2% dividend yield, providing ongoing cash distributions to shareholders.

Prior to Friday's breakout, the stock had struggled to establish sustained upside, and even with the sharp move, it sits 5.2% below its 52-week peak. The rally also prices in considerable execution, with the stock trading at 22.9 times trailing earnings. Wall Street remains decidedly optimistic about the setup, with 88.0% of covering analysts rating the stock a buy and setting an average target of $215.74, which sits 18.4% above Friday's close.

How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
