The Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund trading under XLF, closed -0.4% on Monday, September 14 as weakness in the largest banks masked underlying strength across the broader group. Across the portfolio, 66.6% of the fund is allocated to companies graded A or B, and 61.8% of the sector's stocks advanced during the session, pushing the equal-weighted basket to +0.4%. The overall group was held back by mega-cap lenders, led by Bank of America Corp (-5.1%). That drop came after executive commentary delivered a weaker third-quarter outlook for investment-banking fees and sales and trading revenue during an industry conference.

The split between the cap-weighted Financials sector at -0.3% and the equal-weighted measure at +0.4% illustrates how concentration at the top shaped the session. While the sector headline finished in the red, the majority of financial constituents gained ground on a day when only 3 of the 11 sectors rose across the broader market. Positive momentum was visible in non-bank financial firms, where Coinbase Global Inc (+9.2%) and FactSet Research Systems Inc (+6.5%) paced the advancers.

Elsewhere across the sector, corporate updates pointed to steady operational activity. State Street announced executive leadership appointments, naming a new enterprise chief operating officer alongside leadership for its Alpha division. In regional banking, credit analysts affirmed Huntington Bancshares with a stable outlook. In debt markets, Bank of Nova Scotia issued covered bonds under its global issuance program.

The session leaves XLF at -2.1% over the past month, but the fund's broader trajectory remains positive across longer horizons, with XLF recording +15.7% over the past six months and +6.0% over the past twelve months.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
