On Monday, September 28, the Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund trading under XLI, closed -1.0% as selling in large components outweighed participation across the broader group. Inside the Industrials sector, only 34.1% of stocks advanced. Cap-weighted performance settled at -0.8% compared to -0.6% on an equal-weighted basis, showing that the largest names drove the day's decline. The heaviest drag came from The Boeing Company, which ended the session -6.9% after identifying a navigation software issue on its 737 Max aircraft that could delay upcoming deliveries.

The aerospace weakness overshadowed positive contract news elsewhere in the industrial base. Defense contractor RTX secured a multi-year production contract valued at up to $20.7 billion to expand AMRAAM missile manufacturing. Even so, elevated oil prices and higher Treasury yields weighed on U.S. equities broadly, contributing to a session where 3 of the 11 sectors rose. Individual gainers were led by Ferguson Plc, which finished +2.1%, and Old Dominion Freight Line Inc, which ended at +2.0%.

Across the sector, fundamental quality is distributed across tiers. In EasyAlpha's peer-relative grading, 36.3% of the fund's graded weight sits in companies graded A or B. Companies in those top tiers have stronger fundamentals and historically have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Over longer horizons, XLI remains +10.6% over the past twelve months and +7.8% over the past six months, though recent pressure has left it -5.6% over the past month and -4.6% over the past 100 sessions.

For investors accessing the sector through XLI, which manages $31.9 billion in assets at a 0.08% expense ratio, Monday's close of $168.75 demonstrated how concentrated single-stock headwinds can overcome diversified exposure and steer the fund lower.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
