On Friday, September 11, the Industrials sector moved +1.1% with solid internal breadth, as 75.6% of its member stocks finished higher. The exchange-traded fund tracking the group, the Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLI), closed +1.1% with 47.1% of its graded weight concentrated in companies graded A or B. Top contributors led the session, with Comfort Systems USA Inc (+6.2%) and Quanta Services Inc (+5.1%) pacing the gainers, while Copart Inc (-2.6%) finished as the session's primary laggard. The advance across the group came as retreating crude oil prices and an in-line inflation update eased wider market headwinds.

Alongside macro relief, several industrial companies announced operational and facility expansions. In automotive manufacturing, Ford announced a $1 billion investment to build a new paint shop at its Kentucky Truck Plant. In heavy manufacturing, ARRAY Technologies opened a new production facility in New Mexico to expand domestic capacity. Meanwhile, packaging producer Crown Holdings broke ground on a beverage can plant in India to support international operations.

The sector's performance reflected broad participation across the wider market, where 9 of the 11 sectors rose. Inside the sector, the cap-weighted return of +1.1% ran just ahead of the equal-weighted return of +1.0%, indicating that larger holdings provided a slight additional push to the session. That heavier weighting at the top helped steer the fund's overall session, bringing XLI to a close of $172.36.

The positive session follows a softer period for the sector, with XLI recording -7.3% over the past month. Across longer holding periods, returns remain constructive, standing at +0.5% over the past one hundred days, +4.7% over the past six months, and +12.8% over the past twelve months. EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E, with 47.1% of the fund's graded weight currently sitting in those top two tiers.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
