On Wednesday, September 2, the Communication Services Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund that trades under the ticker XLC, gained +1.4% as buying spread across the group. EasyAlpha's numbers show that 82.4% of the sector's companies rose, while equal-weighted performance gained +1.5% compared to a +1.1% rise for Communication Services on a cap-weighted basis. The stronger equal-weighted move shows that mid-sized and smaller companies did more of the work than the largest index weights. That broad participation came as communication and technology shares led a market-wide rebound.

Individual stock drivers favored digital advertising and media names. The sector's top gainers were Trade Desk Inc (+5.6%) and TKO Group Holdings, Inc. (+4.2%). Demand for advertising technology picked up after an antitrust lawsuit targeting Amazon's ad business pointed to potential competitive openings for independent platforms, alongside interest in new artificial-intelligence tools. On the downside, the steepest decline came from Omnicom Group Inc (-5.0%), though our sources show no reported driver for the stock on the session.

The advance fit into a widely positive day for the broader market, where 10 of the 11 sectors rose. At Wednesday's close, XLC finished at $112.42, bringing its move over the past month to +0.3%. With $21.7 billion in net assets and an expense ratio of 0.08%, the fund concentrates these underlying industry crosscurrents into a single low-cost vehicle.

Behind the session's gains, the sector presents a specific quality profile. EasyAlpha grades 87.1% of the fund's holdings by weight, and 28.7% of that graded weight sits in companies graded A or B. Historically, companies graded A or B have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E because of their stronger fundamentals. Because most of the fund's graded assets sit in average or lower tiers, broad sector advances depend significantly on wide market participation rather than high quality concentrations.

How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
