Broad internal participation lifted Communication Services on Friday, August 28, with 89.5% of its member stocks advancing as the cap-weighted sector rose +1.5% and the exchange-traded fund Communication Services Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLC) gained +1.4%. The move was powered by telecom and broadband providers rather than a narrow tech surge, while only 28.1% of the fund's graded holdings sit in top quality tiers. Investors rotated out of artificial-intelligence positions and into communications-services shares, providing strong support across the sector on a day when broader market leadership faltered.

The day's gains were widespread across the group. Cap-weighted performance of +1.5% slightly outpaced the equal-weighted return of +1.3%, indicating modest extra lift from larger constituents alongside broad baseline strength. Cable and wireless operators led the advance, topped by Charter Communications Inc (+3.6%) and T-Mobile US Inc (+2.6%). Selling was minimal across the roster, with News Corp A (-0.7%) marking the sector's steepest decline. The group stood out among the market's leading sectors for the week. That strength held firm even as broader equity indexes faced pressure from Federal Reserve commentary that heightened interest-rate expectations.

For investors using XLC to track the sector, the day capped a period of steady upward momentum, bringing the fund's return over the past month to +6.0% and its closing price to $112.99. Accessing the fund's $21.7 billion in assets costs an expense ratio of 0.08%, offering low-overhead exposure to the group's changing leadership. EasyAlpha grades 87.1% of the fund's portfolio by weighting. The underlying quality profile, however, shows that only 28.1% of that graded weight earns an A or B grade when evaluated against industry peers. Historically, companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals and have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E.

The sector showed resilience on a day when only 5 of the 11 sectors rose, reflecting steady demand for traditional communication infrastructure amid shifting market crosscurrents. Yet with less than a third of the portfolio graded in the upper tiers, the sector's advance relies heavily on middle-tier and lower-tier quality holdings navigating a complex macroeconomic backdrop.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
