Among the stocks EasyAlpha grades in the Health Care sector, 51.7% of the fund's weight sits in companies graded A or B, the tiers that historically carry lower drawdown risk than peers graded D or E. That quality base showed through on Thursday, October 22 as 77.2% of the sector's S&P 500 members closed in positive territory, making health care a standout on a session when 5 of the 11 sectors rose. The cap-weighted sector finished +1.3%, while its equal-weighted counterpart logged +1.3%, demonstrating that gains were shared evenly rather than concentrated in the largest names. The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund that tracks the sector under ticker XLV, ended the session +1.3% at $181.32. The sector drew buyers as investors rotated away from volatile tech shares and into defensive groups. Market sentiment also reflected expectations that potential midterm election outcomes could protect federal health-care spending.

Individual performance reflected that broad-based demand, led by dialysis and biotechnology providers. DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc closed +5.4% after the company welcomed a federal kidney-care initiative emphasizing earlier diagnosis, expanded treatment choice, and value-based care. Meanwhile, Biogen Inc ended +5.3% as it opened an annual nephrology conference by releasing new long-term clinical data across its kidney disease pipeline.

That widespread strength insulated the fund from a severe drop in Moderna Inc, which logged -17.6%. The decline followed an early online leak of unverified melanoma vaccine trial details. The circulation of the unauthorized material prompted heavy selling across the session. Because the weakness remained confined to the vaccine maker, it failed to derail the wider sector advance.

Over the past month, XLV has moved +7.4%. That performance extends a longer stretch of steady gains, with the fund moving +25.8% over the past six months and +24.2% over the past twelve months.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
