EasyAlpha grades the stocks in the sector against their industry peers, and 25.4% of the fund's graded weight sits in companies graded A or B. Breadth across the group was broad on Tuesday, October 20, with 75.6% of sector members advancing. Even so, the cap-weighted Industrials sector finished +0.1%, compared with +0.8% for an equal-weighted measure of the same companies. The Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund that tracks the sector under the ticker XLI, closed +0.1%. The day's primary propulsion came from earnings-driven gains in specific holdings. Equifax Inc paced the group, closing +11.3% after reporting third-quarter revenue growth of 10% and a 32% increase in net income that countered ongoing softness in mortgage markets. Sector peer 3M Company ended +5.9% after adjusted quarterly profit topped forecasts and executives raised full-year earnings guidance.
Countering the earnings lift, specialized industrial contractors faced valuation scrutiny. Comfort Systems USA Inc ended -4.6% after an analyst reduced its price target on the company to $1,875 from $2,159. That drag restrained the sector even as 9 of the 11 sectors rose across the wider market. Because the largest components carry substantial index weight, pullbacks in select industrial names can readily counterbalance widespread advances among smaller constituents.
For investors holding XLI, the vehicle's longer horizons reflect a cooling trend after earlier gains. While XLI stands at +8.7% over the past twelve months, intermediate windows show cooling: the fund is -1.8% over the past month, -2.5% over the past six months, and -3.6% over the past 100 sessions. The divergence between Tuesday's 75.6% member advance and the muted cap-weighted result underscores how heavily mega-cap industrial names dictate the fund's path. When mega-cap holdings pause, broad participation across the rest of the sector is not always sufficient to generate meaningful headline progress.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
