The sector advanced on wide participation while resting on a narrow foundation of top-tier quality. Across the sector, 77.1% of constituent stocks finished higher on Wednesday, October 21, lifting Industrials to +0.9%. The Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund that tracks the sector under ticker XLI, closed +0.9% at $168.30. Sector gains were driven at the top by Bloom Energy Corp at +7.3%, while Uber Technologies Inc held back performance at -1.9%. Beneath that broad advance, however, high-quality depth remains thin, with only 22.8% of the fund's graded assets sitting in companies graded A or B. That advance occurred against an earnings-led market backdrop, as equipment maker Winnebago Industries jumped 10.7% on stronger-than-expected quarterly earnings and airline carriers saw sustained buying following record third-quarter revenue at United Airlines.
The move in Bloom Energy reflected repositioning ahead of fresh corporate results. Shares in the fuel cell company rebounded ahead of its quarterly report following a prior pullback in power infrastructure names. Electrical peer Generac Holdings Inc also gained traction, posting +4.4%. On the other end of the sector, Uber Technologies represented the day's primary drag.
Beyond quarterly earnings, several heavy manufacturing names announced long-term operational expansions. Industrial gas supplier Linde expanded its long-term supply for Tata Steel in India, de-captivating two air separation units to support increased steel manufacturing. Industrial automation provider Rockwell Automation introduced an AI-native orchestration platform to coordinate factory workflows.
While XLI remains +8.7% over the past twelve months, it is -3.3% over the past six months, reflecting a broader consolidation across capital goods. That divergence brings the sector's quality composition into focus. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Because only 22.8% of the fund sits in those top two tiers, the group is dominated by average- and lower-tier businesses.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
