The U.S. market stands -1.3% from its all-time high as trading prepares to open on Wednesday, October 21. Market participation across the board was broad and positive on Tuesday, October 20, with 76.4% of tracked large U.S. companies finishing higher. Headline index moves were more modest: the S&P 500 closed +0.3%, with SPY ending at $769.05, while the Nasdaq 100 finished -0.1%. Across other major benchmarks, the Dow finished +1.0%, and the Russell 2000 small-cap benchmark closed +1.7%.
While New York was shut, EasyAlpha re-graded the market based on its newest daily evaluation. Across our coverage, our own view moved lower on Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD) C to D on its price behaviour, Intel Corporation (INTC) D to E on its price behaviour, and IDEX Corporation (IEX) B to C on the sentiment around it. Price action in the semiconductor companies drove our reduced grades, reflecting deterioration in their relative trading trends against industry peers. For IDEX Corporation, weaker sentiment across our quantitative measurements carried the downgrade.
At the same time, our assessment moved higher on Generac Holdings Inc (GNRC) E to D on the sentiment around it, Illinois Tool Works Inc (ITW) C to B on the sentiment around it, and Host Hotels & Resorts Inc (HST) D to C on the sentiment around it. Improving sentiment across our tracking drove each of those revisions, lifting their standing relative to their industry peer groups. These rating shifts represent adjustments in our ongoing evaluation of company fundamentals, price behavior, and sentiment, rather than reactions to overnight headlines or corporate news releases.
In round-the-clock benchmark trading while New York was shut, international currency and commodity markets registered modest shifts. As of 10:10 am New York, commodity trading showed gold -1.6% alongside silver -0.3%, while foreign exchange markets recorded the pound against the dollar +0.7% and the yen against the dollar +0.2%.
Looking ahead to Wednesday, October 21, corporate earnings dominate the scheduled calendar. During the session about to open, 88 covered companies will release quarterly financial updates. Before the opening bell, scheduled reports include Philip Morris International Inc (PM, graded B). Once trading closes for the day, attention turns to a heavy slate led by Meta Platforms Inc. (META, graded D), Tesla Inc (TSLA, graded C), Lam Research Corp (LRCX, graded D). The pace of corporate reporting will accelerate significantly over the coming days, with 610 covered companies scheduled to report during the next week.
Among individual stocks to watch at the opening bell, Intuitive Surgical Inc (ISRG) traded down after the company narrowed its 2026 guidance. Automotive distributor Genuine Parts Co (GPC) also faces pressure after the company reduced its full-year earnings outlook in its third-quarter financial release. Meanwhile, healthcare provider DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc (DVA) remains in focus following a sharp decline in the prior session, with no confirmed corporate announcements explaining the drop in major reporting.
Those stories join significant price swings from Tuesday, October 20 that carry over into this morning's trading. On the downside, the previous session brought heavy trading volume for General Motors Company (GM) -6.8% after the automaker signaled roughly $2 billion in rising commodity and logistics costs and assembly disruptions during truck redesigns, overshadowing an earnings beat and an expanded $20 billion share repurchase plan. That weakness extended to DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc (DVA) -6.2% as well. In contrast, corporate earnings beats generated substantial momentum. Shares of Equifax Inc (EFX) +11.3% responded to 10% revenue growth to $1.693 billion alongside expanding operating profit margins. Separately, Hasbro Inc (HAS) +11.2% followed after the company raised its full-year financial outlook on 15% revenue growth.
The central lesson from the latest session lies in the gap between headline index performance and internal market breadth. When an index like the S&P 500 finishes +0.3% and the Nasdaq 100 closes -0.1%, casual observers often assume the market had a flat, inactive day. Yet 76.4% of tracked large U.S. companies finished higher during the same session. That divergence happens because major indexes are weighted by market capitalization, meaning each company's impact is proportional to its total market value. A modest decline in a handful of the largest technology firms can pull a cap-weighted index down or hold it in place, even while hundreds of mid-sized and smaller businesses experience widespread buying. Tracking the share of advancing companies cuts through this index distortion, revealing the true breadth of participation across the market that cap-weighted headline numbers frequently obscure. For investors reviewing their portfolios, broad market participation demonstrates that underlying strength can remain widespread even when major index gauges appear stationary.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
