The Real Estate sector experienced comprehensive selling on Wednesday, September 23, with 0.0% of its S&P 500 member stocks advancing and only 37.5% of the fund's graded weight concentrated in companies graded A or B. Even the group's best-performing names finished lower, as Welltower Inc closed -0.2% and Ventas Inc closed -0.3%, while Alexandria Real Estate Equities Inc anchored the group at -3.7%. The Real Estate Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund tracking the sector under ticker XLRE, closed -1.5%, matching the -1.5% cap-weighted move across the broader sector. That uniform downturn followed a sharp rise in government bond yields, sparked after a stronger-than-expected September business activity report pushed the 10-year Treasury yield to 5.11%, its highest level since 2007.

Real estate equities have faced broader pressure from sensitivity to high interest rates. Market yields gained additional upward momentum following a weak 70 billion dollar five-year Treasury auction and hawkish commentary from Federal Reserve officials.

Breadth across the sector deteriorated entirely, with no single constituent recording a gain during the session. The equal-weighted sector move of -1.6% closely tracked the cap-weighted sector result, indicating that selling was widespread and not merely concentrated in the largest companies. Across the broader equity market, where 1 of the 11 sectors rose, real estate was among the weakest areas.

The session's decline extends a difficult multi-week stretch for property stocks, leaving the fund at -7.7% over the past month and -5.6% across the past 100 sessions. Over longer horizons, the fund sits at -0.3% over the past twelve months, though it retains a return of +3.9% over the past six months.

EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
