Market breadth was positive as 65% of the top 1000 companies finished higher, keeping the S&P 500 -1.1% from its record peak. Leadership was broad across the board, with 11 of the 11 sectors rose, while trading activity tracked normal rhythms as SPY registered 101% of a typical day's volume. The session delivered a steady gain that kept the market near all-time highs without disrupting the underlying environment. The S&P 500 closed +0.7% on Friday, October 2, while the Nasdaq 100 finished +1.0% and the Dow settled +0.5% as weaker labor market data eased pressure on interest rates.
The catalyst arrived from employment data showing that U.S. employers added 29,000 jobs in September, coming in below expectations as the unemployment rate climbed to 4.2%. Investors viewed the slower hiring pace as evidence of cooling wage and price pressures, which reduced expectations for another interest rate hike at the Federal Reserve's next policy meeting. The report led to lower Treasury yields and softer energy prices, helping relieve valuation pressure across equities.
Sector performance was led by Consumer Discretionary, which settled +1.6%. Megacap growth companies provided the heaviest index support: Tesla Inc shares finished +4.7%, while NVIDIA Corporation closed +1.3%. Even within technology, individual names diverged as shares of Seagate Technology sank during Friday's session. Participation extended beyond mega caps into smaller companies, with the Russell 2000 closing +0.9% on the day.
Underlying market health showed few signs of stress. Expected price swings remained subdued, with the VIX settling at 16.4 and its term structure ratio at 0.88, remaining below the level that signals acute stress. On the rates front, the 10-year minus 2-year Treasury yield curve stood at +0.46 points, reflecting a standard upward slope. In credit markets, the high-yield spread sat at 3.24%, measuring the extra yield lenders demand from risky borrowers.
