EasyAlpha grades 64.0% of the Financials sector in the A or B tiers: companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. On Wednesday, October 21, broad strength lifted the sector, with 70.3% of its members advancing. The sector's cap-weighted return of +0.7% matched its equal-weighted return of +0.7%, confirming that Wednesday's progress did not rely solely on the largest banks. Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF), an exchange-traded fund that tracks the sector, closed +0.5% at $56.02. Leading the day's gains, Robinhood Markets Inc closed +3.8%, while Morgan Stanley finished +3.7%. Reporting shows that positive sentiment followed specific catalysts: Robinhood drew higher price targets and fresh buy recommendations, while bank earnings provided an early boost after Capital One Financial beat quarterly earnings expectations with adjusted profit of $6.69 per share.

The sector's steady session arrived amid wider equity market enthusiasm. On Wednesday, major stock indexes climbed on the back of resilient corporate earnings reports, creating favorable conditions for risk assets. Financials participated in a modest advance where 7 of the 11 sectors rose on the day.

Not all constituents advanced during the session. Global Payments Inc was the sector's weakest performer, ending -1.5%. Meanwhile, regional lenders continued strategic growth efforts, with Huntington Bancshares designating Atlanta as a priority amid its Georgia expansion. Even so, declines across the sector were limited in magnitude, reflecting shallow pullbacks rather than systemic selling.

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) has recorded consistent progress over recent months, posting +2.2% over the past month and +8.9% over the past 100 sessions. Over longer periods, the fund has delivered +6.2% across the past twelve months, showing that recent gains align with an ongoing multi-month advance.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
