On Thursday, October 1, broad participation supported the Information Technology sector as 83.1% of its member companies advanced. The equal-weighted group finished at +2.4%, outpacing the cap-weighted sector return of +0.7% and showing that mid-sized holdings drove performance rather than the largest capitalization names. Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK), an exchange-traded fund tracking the sector, closed +1.1% at $197.88, supported by a core where 64.3% of graded assets sit in companies graded A or B. Catalysts in consulting and chip-design software provided the initial spark, as Accenture plc posted quarterly revenue of $18.68 billion and bookings of $22.17 billion, and Synopsys Inc projected fiscal 2027 revenue of approximately $11.15 billion alongside a $1 billion share buyback authorization.

Those corporate updates translated into sharp individual moves at the top of the sector. Accenture plc closed +16.0% after releasing its quarterly figures. Meanwhile, Synopsys Inc ended +12.8% after announcing a multiyear intellectual property agreement with Amazon exceeding $1 billion alongside a partnership with OpenAI to build specialized artificial intelligence models for semiconductor design. Elsewhere in hardware, HP Inc. unveiled new consumer and commercial laptops with artificial intelligence capabilities to refresh its lineup. Conversely, Applovin Corp was the primary laggard within the group, closing -3.1%.

Technology was one of the sector gainers on a session where 5 of the 11 sectors rose. Over intermediate periods, XLK has built upward momentum, recording +7.8% over the past month, +11.2% over the past 100 sessions, and +45.5% over the past six months. Over a full year, the fund sits at -30.5% over the past twelve months.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
