The Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund trading under ticker XLK, closed +1.3% on Monday, October 19. Across the sector, 82.7% of its stocks finished higher, and the equal-weighted sector move of +1.4% finished ahead of the cap-weighted +1.2%. Yet that wide participation rested on a thin base of top-tier quality, with only 31.8% of the fund's weight sitting in companies EasyAlpha grades A or B. Storage makers drove the fund's advance, as Western Digital Corporation finished +6.1% and Sandisk Corp ended +5.5%, after buyers stepped back into hardware and chip stocks following the previous week's selloff tied to interest rates and AI financing concerns.

Technology's advance stood apart from the rest of the market. Across the session, 3 of the 11 sectors rose, with technology providing the main counterweight while most broader market stocks declined. Sentiment found support as lower Treasury yields and easing crude-oil prices supported a rebound in chip stocks. That shift encouraged investors to re-enter hardware names that had borne the brunt of recent selling.

Within the sector, gains centered on data-center suppliers and product announcements. Networking stocks rallied as the broader technology rebound lifted artificial intelligence equipment makers. Consumer technology also saw positive headlines, as Apple announced an October 28 product launch event where analysts anticipate its first touchscreen laptop. Meanwhile, not all hardware suppliers participated: Flex Ltd fell behind the group, ending -3.2%.

The close at $185.89 brings some short-term relief after recent volatility, though XLK still stands at -0.5% over the past 100 sessions. Monday's advance showed widespread gains across equipment and storage providers, but that participation also highlighted the contrast between a quick sector-wide rebound and a group where top-tier fundamentals remain limited.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
