  • Our read: EasyAlpha grades Canadian Natural Resources Ltd A, up from D, with growth as its strongest area and volume behavior as the main risk to monitor.
  • The day: Shares fell 2.9% on Wednesday, September 16 as energy markets softened, while the company's quality grade moved from D to A.
  • Watching: Scheduled quarterly results arrive on Thursday, November 5.

The company stands out today because its peer-relative quality grade advanced to A in EasyAlpha's latest update. EasyAlpha grades companies against their industry peers across the top 1,000 U.S. companies. Grade A reflects excellent quality, placing a company among the strongest in its industry. Historically, companies graded A or B have demonstrated stronger fundamentals and carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than those graded D or E.

Latest quarterly revenue growth reached +69.5% year over year, supported by solid profitability with a return on equity of 26.7%. Valuation also remains restrained for a business with a $106.3 billion market value, trading at a price-to-earnings ratio of 12.4 alongside a dividend yield of 4.8%.

On Wednesday, the shares settled at $50.07, marking a notable decline as crude oil prices slipped on easing global supply concerns. Over a longer horizon, the stock is +47.9% so far this year and sits just 3.4% below its 52-week peak.

An A grade does not remove commodity exposure or market doubts. The main area of caution in the company's profile is volume behavior. In addition, short interest rose sharply. Wall Street expectations also appear tempered: among 23 analysts covering the stock, fewer than half rate it a buy, with the average price target of $48.91 sitting 2.3% below the current close.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
