  • Our read: EasyAlpha grades CH Robinson Worldwide Inc D, down from B, ranking it below average among Industrials peers in the S&P 500. While growth leads its profile, price trend is the primary vulnerability, leaving the company graded D by EasyAlpha while 76.0% of 25 analyst ratings are buys.
  • The day: The stock fell 10.8% to close at $140.61 on Monday, October 5 after announcing a $5.8 billion buyout of rival RXO.
  • Watching: Third-quarter financial results, scheduled for Wednesday, November 4.

Shares of CH Robinson Worldwide tumbled on Monday after announcing a $5.8 billion cash-and-stock buyout of rival freight broker RXO. The transaction unites two major players in North American transportation brokerage, expanding the company's freight network density.

Heavy selling pressure emerged across the session as investors weighed the scale of the transaction, pushing trading volume to 6.0x its 20-session average. The decline marked the fourth-largest single-day drop for the stock over the past year and its largest one-day decline since Thursday, July 30.

The sell-off met a company that entered the session carrying a reduced quality standing. EasyAlpha grades the company D, down two notches from B in the latest run. In EasyAlpha's historical studies across market cycles, companies graded A or B have demonstrated stronger financial fundamentals and carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. A D grade reflects below-average quality relative to industry peers in the S&P 500. While quarterly revenue grew +19.3% year over year, profit margin stands at 3.7%.

The drop extends a difficult stretch for the shares. Following Monday's move, the stock is -12.5% so far this year and sits 32.9% below its 52-week high. At a trailing price-to-earnings ratio of 26.8, the valuation remains an anchor, even as Wall Street analysts remain broadly positive with an average price target of $196.96.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
