  • Our read: CH Robinson Worldwide Inc carried an EasyAlpha grade of C into Wednesday's session, pointing to average quality compared to its Industrials peers. Solid growth is offset by a deteriorating price trend.
  • The day: Shares tumbled 11.1% to close at $127.60 as rising operating costs and shrinking cash flow overshadowed a third-quarter earnings beat.
  • Watching: Whether the price holds above its 52-week low of $124.93, with the stock sitting 2.1% above that floor.

On Wednesday, the company posted third-quarter financial results that appeared resilient on the surface. Total revenue reached $5.4 billion, and diluted earnings reached $1.67 per share in third-quarter financial results. Yet the market looked past those headline figures. Investors focused instead on cash generation, where operating cash flow fell as higher transportation costs tied up working capital.

Expense pressure and transaction uncertainty compounded the selling. Management kept its full-year operating income target range unchanged. At the same time, market participants weighed the financial impact of the planned $5.8 billion acquisition of RXO. Completing the transaction will require pausing share repurchases after closing to reduce leverage. Meanwhile, questions remain regarding integration uncertainties that have divided analysts.

Trading volume surged to 2.2x the 20-session average as the stock recorded its fourth-largest daily decline of the past year. The drop marked the shares' steepest one-day loss since Thursday, July 30. The retreat left the stock sitting 39.1% below its 52-week high, while over the past month, the shares are -14.8%.

The company carried an EasyAlpha grade of C into Wednesday's session, placing it in the middle tier of its industry group. A grade of C reflects average quality, where most stocks land. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E.

While the business benefits from solid growth, its price trend remains troubled. The company operates on a thin profit margin of 3.7%, leaving earnings vulnerable to rising transportation expenses and working-capital swings. Wall Street analysts remain largely optimistic, with 76.0% of the 25 analysts covering the stock rating it a buy. Their consensus price target sits 50.6% above Wednesday's close. However, Wednesday's drop demonstrated that headline profit beats cannot overcome weakening cash flows and the balance sheet burdens of a debt-funded takeover.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
