On Tuesday, September 15, the Materials Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund trading under the ticker XLB, closed +0.5% at $50.74. Gains were broad across the sector, with 64.0% of its S&P 500 members advancing. The advance in agricultural chemicals and fertilizer names came amid an agricultural upcycle and accelerating industrial demand across the chemical space. Fertilizer producers found support from firm nitrogen pricing, sustained demand, and constrained global supply, alongside capital returns through share repurchases. Elsewhere in the sector, materials companies saw operational developments including manufacturing facility expansions.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
