Broad participation supported materials stocks on Thursday, October 22, with 73.9% of the sector advancing as 5 of the 11 sectors rose. EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers, and 37.7% of the weight in Materials Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLB), an exchange-traded fund tracking the sector, sits in companies graded A or B. Smaller constituents drove the day's performance: the equal-weighted sector return of +0.9% finished ahead of the cap-weighted sector result of +0.3%. Gains were led by Dow Inc at +4.7% and Packaging Corp of America at +4.1%, which offset Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc ending at -6.3%. Stronger earnings reports and resilient pricing power provided the catalyst, as chemical producers topped profit forecasts while packaging manufacturers reported higher earnings.

At Dow Inc, the sector's top gainer, third-quarter adjusted earnings reached $0.71 per share, exceeding market estimates. The company recorded 13% net sales growth and guided fourth-quarter operating profit above expectations, supported by pricing gains and cost reductions. Packaging manufacturers experienced similar tailwinds. Packaging Corp of America gained after posting third-quarter adjusted earnings of $3.04 per share.

By contrast, copper mining pulled against the broader group. Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc ended at -6.3%, marking the steepest drop in the sector. Our sources show no reported company-specific announcement explaining the slide.

The fund closed the session at $51.71, recording +0.8%. While chemical and packaging earnings provided immediate support, the sector continues to carry a modest quality profile. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E.

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
