EasyAlpha grades the stocks in the sector, where 41.7% of the fund's graded weight sits in companies graded A or B. On Thursday, October 8, breadth was positive as 73.1% of the sector's S&P 500 members advanced. The exchange-traded fund Materials Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLB) closed +0.6% at $49.26, propelled by large chemical makers. The sector posted a cap-weighted move of +0.5% compared with an equal-weighted result of +0.4%, indicating that larger components did more of the work. Leading the group were LyondellBasell Industries NV, which ended +3.2%, and Dow Inc, which finished +3.0%. Our sources show no company-specific driver reported for either chemical maker, with their gains coming while rising oil prices and higher yields flagged inflation risk, leaving broader equity markets unsettled.

The sector's upside met resistance from agricultural chemicals. While commodity chemical producers gained, Corteva Inc closed -5.0%. The drop came as analysts reduced the company's price target to $20 following its recent spinoff, citing ongoing pressure in crop protection. That decline acted as the primary brake on the group. Elsewhere in the sector, steelmaker Nucor announced a $105 million expansion of its Crawfordsville manufacturing facility.

For investors tracking the sector through XLB, an expense ratio of 0.08% offers low-cost exposure, but a single session does not erase a difficult year. Over the past twelve months, the fund sits at -45.2%, compared with -4.1% over the past month. EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Because 41.7% of the fund's graded weight sits in those top tiers, more than half of the fund remains in companies graded C, D, or E.

How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
