Chevron and Exxon Mobil Power Energy as Most Peers Lag
Crude supply risks lifted the sector's mega-caps on Wednesday, but negative breadth and a modest quality profile show the advance rested on few shoulders.

On Wednesday, October 14, the Energy sector showed a stark split between its biggest integrated producers and the rest of the group. Only 36.7% of the fund's weight sits in companies graded A or B, reflecting a quality profile where industry-leading grades remain scarce. Breadth inside the sector was narrow: just 38.1% of members advanced, leaving the cap-weighted sector +0.8% while an equal-weighted version finished -0.4%. The Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund that tracks the sector under the ticker XLE, closed +0.6% at $67.61. That gain was driven by its two largest holdings, with Chevron Corp finishing +2.0% and Exxon Mobil Corp ending +1.7%, even as smaller components struggled, such as Texas Pacific Land Corporation at -3.9%. That top-heavy move followed rising crude prices after attacks caused damage near Saudi Aramco facilities. Crude markets also weighed higher risk premiums as new tactics emerged to target commercial tankers.
Energy was one of the few bright spots in the broader market, where 3 of the 11 sectors rose. On the economic calendar, official data showed consumer energy costs rose 5.2% in September. Still, commodity gains met resistance after global oil demand estimates were lowered for the year, citing elevated fuel prices and slower economic expansion.
Within the sector, the concentration at the top was decisive. Chevron Corp found support as shares traded at all-time highs above $217. Exxon Mobil Corp also saw steady interest. Together, Chevron and Exxon Mobil account for a dominant portion of the fund, meaning their combined upward push offset declines across other holdings.
Over longer periods, XLE reflects a volatile cycle. The fund is +2.5% over the past month and +13.6% over the past 100 sessions. Over the trailing twelve months, however, the fund is -21.7%. While the fund holds $39.1 billion in net assets at an expense ratio of 0.08%, its heavy tilt toward its largest members means that broader sector health can diverge sharply from the headline index.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
