The Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund tracking the sector under ticker XLK, closed -0.1% on Tuesday, October 13. Across the portfolio, 40.3% of the fund's graded weight sits in companies carrying A or B quality grades. Market breadth was subdued during the session. Only 46.5% of the sector's stocks gained ground. Selling pressure centered on Applied Materials Inc, which finished -6.7%, anchoring the fund despite pockets of strength. The drag stemmed from hardware markets, where developments in Chinese memory technology and broader questions regarding artificial intelligence spending prompted reassessments of semiconductor valuations.
The sharpest decline centered on the semiconductor equipment group. During an investor presentation, management outlined long-term revenue and market-share targets supported by advanced chip manufacturing. However, market reaction turned negative after the presentation failed to provide near-term spending guidance for wafer fabrication equipment, while reigniting concerns over equipment market share.
Gains among top advancers provided a counterweight to hardware weakness. CDW Corp led the advancers, closing at +5.7%. Oracle Corporation also advanced, finishing at +4.3%. In corporate developments, new test platforms were introduced to validate high-speed Ethernet fabrics for artificial intelligence data centers. The divergence between hardware suppliers and enterprise software kept the broader sector balanced. Large-cap weighting helped steady the group. On a cap-weighted basis, Information Technology closed at +0.1%. Across the wider market, 4 of the 11 sectors rose.
Intermediate returns have remained positive across several measurement windows. The fund has posted +6.5% over the past month, +9.9% over the past 100 sessions, and +30.6% over the past six months. Over the past twelve months, the fund stands at -31.2%.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
