Broad gains across semiconductor and hardware shares lifted the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund with ticker XLK, to a close of +0.7% on Tuesday, September 22. Inside the Information Technology sector, 63.9% of member companies ended higher, with the cap-weighted sector moving +0.6% while an equal-weighted measure tracked +0.5%. The advance rested on a solid base, with 53.9% of the fund held in companies EasyAlpha grades A or B, which historically carry stronger fundamentals and lower risk of large drawdowns than peers in lower tiers. Market sentiment drew support as renewed optimism around artificial intelligence demand and retreating oil prices encouraged risk-taking on a day when 5 of the 11 sectors rose.

Monolithic Power Systems Inc closed at +8.1%, while Sandisk Corp finished at +6.8%, though our sources show no reported driver for either move. Industry momentum was further supported by product developments, including automated chip-design software and next-generation data center processors. Meanwhile, Apple moved to challenge existing cloud infrastructure models by promoting local hardware execution to eliminate per-token costs. Dragging on the sector, Gen Digital Inc. closed at -6.4%.

EasyAlpha grades companies across the sector against their industry peers. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E.

The session extended a strong multi-month recovery. The fund has returned +7.1% over the past month and +44.2% over the past six months. Even with this rebound, the fund stands at -30.6% over the past twelve months. That contrast illustrates how the current rally continues to repair ground lost during earlier sector turbulence.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
