Shares of Coinbase Global Inc surged +10.1% on Thursday, September 3 to close at $192.70, marking the stock's largest single-day advance since Friday, July 31. Volume reached 1.4x the 20-session average as crypto-linked equities rallied alongside Bitcoin, which climbed roughly 4.8% to reach a three-month high above $81,000.

Macroeconomic signals and policy developments helped drive the move across crypto-linked equities. Broader market sentiment improved after Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller signaled support for holding interest rates steady if upcoming inflation figures remain supportive, easing market worries about near-term monetary tightening. In addition, the sector drew support from renewed regulatory optimism around the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act.

While Thursday's jump lifted the stock's one-month gain to +28.6%, the stock carried an E grade against its industry peers in the S&P 500 into the session. In historical evaluations across the market, companies graded A or B have demonstrated stronger fundamentals and have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. In scored dimensions, liquidity stands out as the company's strongest area while profitability is its primary watch item, with quarterly revenue down -17.3% year over year.

That fundamental evaluation stands in direct tension with Wall Street consensus. The stock carried an E grade into the day even as 64.7% of the 34 analysts covering the company recommend buying it. The shares still trade at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 909.1. Even with the day's sharp rally, the stock remains down -14.8% so far this year and sits 52.1% below its 52-week high of $402.16.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
