On Thursday, September 10, broad internal participation lifted the Communication Services sector even as its largest components held back the headline return. Inside the sector, 77.8% of S&P 500 member stocks finished higher, generating an equal-weighted return of +1.3% while the cap-weighted sector closed +0.2%. The primary exchange-traded fund tracking the group, Communication Services Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLC), closed +0.6% at $111.47, propelled by Reddit, Inc. (+6.1%) and Charter Communications Inc (+5.0%) against resistance from Meta Platforms Inc. (-1.4%). Across the 87.3% of assets that EasyAlpha evaluates, only 27.4% of the fund sits in companies graded A or B. The sector was an outlier on a session where 2 of the 11 sectors rose, as climbing oil prices and higher bond yields pulled major indexes lower.

Specific catalysts supported the sector's top gainers. Reddit, Inc. (+6.1%) rallied after monthly audience data showed user growth reached its strongest rate of the year, leading all sector constituents. Strong performance from Charter Communications Inc (+5.0%) added further support. In contrast, Meta Platforms Inc. (-1.4%) slipped, demonstrating how concentration in mega-cap technology and media names can suppress the sector fund's overall gain when top holdings falter.

While Communication Services Select Sector SPDR Fund provides low-cost exposure at an expense ratio of 0.08% across $22.4 billion in net assets, holding the fund concentrates capital in middle and lower quality tiers. EasyAlpha grades companies against their industry peers. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Because just 27.4% of the fund's graded holdings reach those top two tiers, the portfolio remains heavily weighted toward companies with average or below-average peer scores.

The day's performance leaves XLC at +0.2% over the past month. The longer-term trajectory remains muted, with the fund recording -3.3% over the past six months, -6.1% across the chart window, and -2.7% over the past twelve months. Solid breadth on Thursday provided temporary stability, but the sector has yet to overcome its extended drawdown.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
