The Communication Services sector dropped -1.6% on Monday, August 31, dragged down primarily by its largest holdings as the equal-weighted sector fell a more modest -1.0%. Breadth across the group was weak, with only 10.5% of its member companies managing to finish higher. The sector's primary vehicle, the exchange-traded fund Communication Services Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLC), declined -1.3%. The retreat followed a broader market sell-off after U.S. strikes on Iranian sites pushed oil prices higher and weighed on equities.
The downturn left communication names among the market's laggards on a session when 2 of the 11 sectors rose. Individual losses across the group were led by Take-Two Interactive Software Inc (-6.7%), which faced added pressure after unauthorized footage of Grand Theft Auto VI leaked online. Gains were scarce and modest across the sector, with Trade Desk Inc (+1.1%) and Paramount Skydance Corporation Class B Common Stock (+0.3%) among the few names finishing in positive territory.
The session's retreat also highlights an underlying vulnerability in the sector's composition. EasyAlpha's quality analysis shows that only 28.1% of the fund's graded holdings sit in companies graded A or B, with EasyAlpha covering 87.1% of the portfolio's total weight. In EasyAlpha's grading framework, companies graded A or B have demonstrated stronger fundamentals and historically have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E.
While XLC offers low-cost access across $21.7 billion in net assets at an annual expense ratio of 0.08%, the passive fund structure means investors absorb the full weight of the sector's lower-graded tiers. Even after Monday's slide to a closing price of $111.48, XLC maintains a gain of +3.0% over the past month. However, the heavy concentration in lower-graded names and Monday's narrow participation leave recent momentum sensitive to sudden shifts in market conditions.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
