Associated Press reported that major U.S. stock benchmarks climbed on Friday as strong business activity data supported corporate earnings optimism. Interactive Brokers noted that the services purchasing managers index reached a 20-month high, helping stabilize equities even as higher Treasury yields applied pressure. With no single industry-wide catalyst emerging for the day, Communication Services advanced in step with the broader market rebound.
For investors tracking the sector through Communication Services Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLC), an exchange-traded fund, the fund closed at $111.40. That marked a +0.7% gain on the session and brought its one-month advance to +5.7%. Across the S&P 500 constituents, the Communication Services sector rose +0.8% on a cap-weighted basis, outperforming the equal-weighted sector move of +0.5%. When the cap-weighted return outpaces the equal-weighted figure, it shows that the sector's largest companies did more of the heavy lifting.
Internal breadth was positive across the sector, with 13 of 19 advancing during the session. News Corp A (+2.5%) led the gainers, followed by Charter Communications Inc (+1.6%). Charter's advance followed the closing of its Cox Communications acquisition and Liberty Broadband transaction, according to an official announcement from Charter Communications. On the other side of the ledger, TKO Group Holdings, Inc. (-1.2%) posted the steepest decline among sector constituents.
EasyAlpha grades companies against their industry peers. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. EasyAlpha grades 78.2% of XLC by portfolio weight. Just 29.9% of that graded weight sits in the top A or B tiers, showing that most of the fund's graded exposure remains in average or lower quality tiers even as large-cap momentum lifts the broader group.
