On Thursday, August 27, the Communication Services Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund that tracks the sector under the ticker XLC, dropped -1.1% to close at $111.41. The broader Communication Services sector fell -0.8% on a cap-weighted basis, while an equal-weighted basket across the group dropped -0.9%. The slight spread between the cap-weighted and equal-weighted measures showed that the sector's largest companies held up marginally better than smaller peers, though selling was steady across the board.

The primary driver of the pullback was a broad reallocation of capital across equity sectors. The Associated Press reported that an 8.7% surge in Nvidia and gains in Salesforce lifted major indexes, creating a narrow market advance that masked declines across most S&P 500 components. Benzinga reported that communication services dropped as investor attention shifted toward enterprise technology, while Meta Platforms faced additional pressure as investors evaluated a youth-safety settlement.

Internal breadth across the sector underscored how little room buyers left for communication stocks on Thursday, as only 5 of 19 finished the session higher. The sector's weakest performer was Charter Communications Inc (-3.6%), where research data from Charles Schwab recorded a same-day beneficial ownership filing by Cox Enterprises alongside the stock's drop to $148.32. Only a few names resisted the downward trend across the session, led by Trade Desk Inc (+3.0%) and EchoStar Corporation (+1.0%).

Thursday's drop paused recent momentum for the fund, though XLC remains up +1.7% over the past month. The session's pullback highlights how quickly capital rotated away from communication names on a day dominated by enterprise technology earnings.

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
