The Communication Services Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund that tracks the sector under the ticker XLC, closed -1.1% on Wednesday, October 21 as large holdings weighed on the group. EasyAlpha evaluates 86.6% of the fund's portfolio, with companies graded A or B accounting for 22.5% of that graded weight. Internal breadth remained narrow: only 21.1% of sector members advanced during the session, even as 7 of the 11 sectors rose across the broader market. Cap-weighted Communication Services finished -1.2%, moving further than the equal-weighted sector reading of -0.6% and showing that the largest companies drove the decline. That downward pressure came as quarterly updates from major telecom and media companies raised fresh questions about profitability.

Much of the sector's decline stemmed from AT&T Inc., which finished -6.4% on the day. In its third-quarter financial release, the telecommunications company delivered an adjusted profit beat but disclosed a 4% year-over-year decline in fiber average revenue per user. Even as its quarterly results showed a raised full-year profit target alongside a $2.6 billion wireless impairment in Mexico, investors sold the stock because its underlying earnings growth forecast disappointed analysts.

Media and streaming holdings faced comparable pressure. Shares of Netflix declined after the company reduced its full-year advertising forecast and issued a below-midpoint annual revenue outlook. Despite posting a profit beat, the streaming provider faced selling as reduced ad guidance fueled worries over slowing growth, compounding the weakness across digital advertising and entertainment names.

The fund saw bright spots among smaller holdings, though they lacked the weight to offset the broader decline. Skydance Corporation closed +10.6% and EchoStar Corporation finished +7.2%, though our sources show no reported driver behind either move. Because XLC weights its holdings by market capitalization, strong sessions in smaller companies could not counterbalance the drag created by the sector's largest members. The fund closed at $108.97, leaving its one-month move at -4.0%.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality

  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
