The Communication Services Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLC), an exchange-traded fund that tracks the sector, closed -0.3% on Wednesday, October 7 as a calm headline reading masked internal friction. Inside the group, market breadth was positive, with 61.1% of sector members advancing and the equal-weighted sector finishing +0.1%. At the same time, the fund carries a thin quality cushion, with only 22.4% of its graded weight in companies graded A or B. Comcast Corp proved the biggest drag on the day, finishing -2.9% and offsetting a gain from Reddit, Inc., which ended +2.6%. Broader market pressure drove that split, as benchmark Treasury yields climbed to multi-decade peaks. In addition, worries over persistent inflation and expanding government debt weighed on equities.
Our sources show no reported company-specific catalyst for Comcast on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Reddit managed to finish in positive territory, but our sources show no reported driver for the advance. Because the sector's largest market-cap constituents faced selling pressure, gains from smaller firms could not keep the index in positive territory.
That gap between individual stock performance and the sector index highlights the mechanics of market-cap weighting. Across the wider market, 3 of the 11 sectors rose. Within Communication Services, the divergence between the equal-weighted return of +0.1% and the cap-weighted move of -0.1% shows that smaller holdings held up relatively well.
The fund's quality profile explains why that concentration matters. Historically, companies graded A or B demonstrate stronger operating fundamentals and carry a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. That relationship is an empirical finding across peer groups rather than a guarantee for any single stock. In Communication Services Select Sector SPDR Fund, however, only 22.4% of graded holdings reach those top two tiers, while EasyAlpha grades 87.0% of the portfolio. The vast majority of the fund's graded assets sit in companies graded C or lower.
At the end of the session, XLC closed at $111.29. The move leaves the fund standing at -4.1% over the past 100 sessions.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
