Upstream energy producers slid on Wednesday as crude oil prices retreated significantly across global commodity markets. ConocoPhillips slid along with other oil and gas exploration names as crude prices fell. Exploration and production peers dropped across the board as the commodity pullback concentrated losses in upstream producers.

The company felt the direct impact of that commodity decline on Wednesday. The drop ranked as the company's largest daily decline over the past year, accompanied by trading volume running at 1.4x its 20-session average. Even with the single-session pullback, the stock remains +41.6% so far this year and sits 6.4% below its 52-week high.

Beyond daily commodity price movements, the underlying business continues to produce steady operational numbers. Latest quarterly revenue growth was +35.5% year over year, while the company delivered a profit margin of 14.4%.

EasyAlpha graded the company C entering Wednesday's session, evaluating it against industry peers in the S&P 500. A C grade denotes average quality, placing the business in the middle tier where most companies land. In EasyAlpha's historical risk research, companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals and have historically carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. For the business, growth stands as the primary scored strength, whereas momentum represents the main area to monitor as price momentum moderates.

Wall Street sentiment remains largely positive. Among the 25 analysts covering the stock, 76.0% hold buy ratings, with an average price target of $146.08 that sits 10.2% above Wednesday's close. Earlier in the week, analysts lifted their price target to $169.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
