The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP), an exchange-traded fund, finished +0.6% on Monday, October 5 as 67.6% of its holdings moved higher. Large-cap holdings set the pace for the session, with the cap-weighted sector delivering +0.7% compared to +0.5% on an equal-weighted basis. Across the portfolio, 48.3% of the fund's weight sits in companies graded A or B for peer-relative quality. The sector moved upward as major benchmark indexes approached record highs. Broadly, consumer equities found afternoon demand across trading desks.

Individual company news provided additional support across the portfolio. Archer-Daniels-Midland Company led the sector with +2.5% as progress on an amino-acid joint venture with CJ CheilJedang reinforced investor confidence alongside an improved earnings outlook. Core household goods maker Colgate-Palmolive Company added steady support near the top of the fund, posting +2.3%. In discount retail, Dollar Tree gained after receiving a brokerage upgrade. Separately, Dollar Tree and Walmart announced product recalls affecting select items. Wholesale operator Costco Wholesale maintained steady footing following its recent report of sustained fourth-quarter sales growth. On the downside, Target Corporation lagged the rest of the group, closing at -1.9%.

The broader market environment showed wide participation across industries, as 10 of the 11 sectors rose. For the fund, the positive session pauses a multi-week retreat, though the longer trend remains mixed. The fund stands at -5.0% over the past month and -4.4% over the intermediate term, while holding a gain of +3.8% over the past twelve months. Performance across individual segments reflects this divide, with selective retail and manufacturing gains balancing softer performance elsewhere in the group.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
