On Friday, October 16, broad buying carried the Consumer Staples sector to +1.3%, with 84.4% of its member companies finishing higher. The exchange-traded fund tracking the sector, the Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP), closed +1.1% at $87.63. Top gainers set the pace: Philip Morris International Inc closed +2.5% and PepsiCo Inc finished +2.4%, lifting the cap-weighted sector above the equal-weighted return of +1.0%. Companies graded A or B account for 43.0% of the fund, reflecting a portfolio where less than half the holdings sit in the highest quality tiers. That advance unfolded alongside steep losses in large technology stocks, while consumer staples and utilities finished as the market's strongest groups as government bond yields edged lower.
The sector's top gainers provided most of the momentum. Philip Morris recorded the day's sharpest gain among sector members, while PepsiCo also advanced. In corporate news, KFC announced plans to switch to Coca-Cola as its exclusive beverage supplier in U.S. restaurants starting in 2027. At the other end of the group, Estee Lauder Companies Inc closed -2.5% as the session's deepest decliner.
The gain in consumer staples stood in contrast to broader market trends. Major benchmark indexes ended lower, weighed down by continued declines in major technology and chip shares. Consumer staples, by contrast, closed higher even as the wider market lost ground.
The sector's resilience stood out against a split broader market where 6 of the 11 sectors rose. Friday's performance builds on a constructive stretch for the fund, which has posted +5.0% over the past month, +6.4% across the past six months, and +11.4% over the past twelve months.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
