On Friday, August 28, the Consumer Staples sector rose +0.5%, outperforming a retreating broader market as 60.6% of its member stocks advanced. The exchange-traded fund Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) gained +0.4% to close at $85.45. The advance came as broader markets declined after Federal Reserve commentary indicated that inflation remains persistent and interest rate increases may still be required.
Kevin Warsh noted that underlying inflation has not slowed to target levels, lifting Treasury yields and pressuring major equity indexes. Even so, consumer stocks found modest buying support. Inside the sector, Bunge Global SA (+3.5%) and Archer-Daniels-Midland Company (+3.1%) led the advance. Our sources show no reported company-specific catalyst behind those moves, while 5 of the 11 sectors rose across the market. On the other side of the ledger, Estee Lauder Companies Inc (-2.7%) posted the group's steepest decline.
The sector's cap-weighted gain of +0.5% slightly outpaced its equal-weighted return of +0.4%, indicating that larger holdings did slightly more heavy lifting during the session. Over the past month, XLP is flat at 0.0%, reflecting a calm period for staples despite macro volatility.
For investors using XLP as their sector vehicle, the portfolio's underlying quality mix is split. EasyAlpha grades every company in the sector against its industry peers. Today, 45.4% of the fund's graded holdings land in companies graded A or B. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Companies graded C represent average quality for their industry, while those graded D or E show more warning signs than their peers. With more than half the portfolio sitting in average or lower tiers, the fund balances steady daily performance with mixed underlying quality.
