On Monday, October 19, the Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund that trades under ticker XLP, closed -0.4% as defensive stocks lagged a tech-led market. EasyAlpha grades the stocks in Consumer Staples against their industry peers, and 42.1% of the fund's graded weight sits in companies graded A or B. Breadth across the group was exceptionally narrow, with only 17.6% of the sector's S&P 500 members finishing higher. The cap-weighted sector closed -0.4%, while an equal-weighted view of the same stocks closed -0.7%, showing that the largest names helped steady the fund. Beverage maker Monster Beverage Corp finished at +2.3%, while agribusiness supplier Bunge Global SA closed at -2.8%. The move unfolded as market interest turned away from defensive sectors, with technology and artificial intelligence shares rebounding from the previous week's drop while most non-technology shares declined.

Beverages and large-scale retailers provided pockets of resilience within the sector. Alongside Monster Beverage, PepsiCo Inc supported the fund, finishing at +1.6%. Meanwhile, Walmart moved to sell at least $2.5 billion of U.S. dollar bonds while considering a Canadian offering.

Monday's quiet session took place against a backdrop of broad-market concentration. Across the market, 3 of the 11 sectors rose, illustrating that defensive groups faced an uphill battle as trading focused on growth and artificial intelligence. The modest retreat in the sector was therefore more a reflection of macro sector rotation than company-specific trouble. While individual food and retail names managed constructive corporate updates, defensive equities broadly took a back seat.

For investors tracking the sector through the fund, Monday's move leaves XLP at $87.24. The fund's return stands at +5.4% over the past month and +9.4% over the past twelve months.

How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
