Dow Jones Newswires reported that consumer companies slipped on Thursday as oil futures rebounded and Treasury yields rose. At the same time, the Associated Press reported that broader equity gains were heavily concentrated in major technology shares, leaving traditional defensive groups lagging behind even as the majority of individual stocks in the S&P 500 retreated.
Company-level quarterly updates intensified the selling pressure across food producers. In an official earnings announcement, Hormel Foods reported lower sales and declining retail volume, cited pressured consumer conditions, and reduced its full-year net sales guidance. Dow Jones Newswires reported that Hormel cut its sales outlook amid high fuel costs and a difficult consumer environment.
These macro pressures and earnings concerns directly impacted Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund tracking the sector under the ticker XLP. On Thursday, August 27, XLP fell -1.4% to finish at $85.08. Across the S&P 500, the Consumer Staples sector moved -1.5% on a cap-weighted basis, while the equal-weighted sector move was -1.4%. The close alignment between the cap-weighted and equal-weighted figures indicates that the day's losses were distributed broadly throughout the sector, rather than driven exclusively by the largest portfolio components.
Market breadth within the sector reflected widespread selling. Positive moves were confined to just 6 of 34 stocks in the group. Hormel Foods Corporation (-10.2%) dropped sharply to rank as the sector's primary laggard following its financial report. Gains were scarce across the industry, with Dollar General Corporation (+2.5%) and Kraft Heinz Co (+1.4%) among the few names to advance.
Thursday's decline added to ongoing softness for the sector, leaving XLP down -2.6% over the past month.
