EasyAlpha's numbers show a steady, broad session for the Consumer Staples sector on Wednesday, September 2, with 65.6% of its stocks advancing and 50.2% of the graded weight sitting in companies graded A or B. The cap-weighted sector rose +0.2%, while an equal-weighted view climbed +0.4%, showing that mid-sized and smaller members did more of the lifting than the largest heavyweights. Exchange-traded fund Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) closed at $85.51, gaining +0.3% on the day. The advance came as broader stock indexes rebounded from a three-day decline alongside stable Treasury yields and steady energy prices.
The broader market backdrop supported defensive sectors as 10 of the 11 sectors rose. A weaker-than-anticipated private payroll report, which showed 38,000 jobs added against expectations of 47,000, helped moderate interest rate expectations across financial markets. While macro sentiment leaned toward dip-buying in oversold areas, staples saw consistent, low-volatility demand across multiple sub-industries.
Within the sector, consumer beverage and personal care names paced the gains, led by Keurig Dr Pepper Inc (+2.2%) and Kimberly-Clark Corporation (+2.1%). Selected food producers also drew interest after earnings reports and debt reduction plans supported sentiment across packaged goods. On the downside, retail weakness kept some names in check, with Caseys General Stores Inc (-1.7%) finishing as the group's weakest performer. Over the past month, XLP is up +0.2%, reflecting a calm, defensive posture in the fund.
For investors tracking the sector through Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund, the vehicle provides broad exposure with $14.6 billion in net assets and an expense ratio of 0.08%. In EasyAlpha's grading, companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals and have historically carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. With 50.2% of its graded weight in A or B companies, the fund maintains a balanced quality profile, with about half its assets anchored in the stronger tiers of the sector.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
