The Consumer Staples sector advanced on Friday, August 21, buoyed by solid retail earnings and steady economic activity across consumer-facing businesses. The Associated Press reported that major stock indexes rebounded as business-activity surveys pointed to growth and retail earnings topped expectations. Within staples, BJ's Wholesale Club reported positive comparable sales and raised its full-year earnings outlook. That constructive tone supported Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP), an exchange-traded fund that tracks the sector, which rose +0.8% to close at $85.99. The fund has gained +3.3% over the past month.

Earnings momentum from earlier in the week continued to drive the session's top performers. Leading the sector was Estee Lauder Companies Inc (+6.0%), which extended its rally after Reuters reported that the company forecast full-year profit above Wall Street estimates on improving international demand. Retailer Target Corporation (+4.5%) also gained ground after Target reported higher store traffic and raised its full-year earnings forecast. At the other end of the group, Bunge Global SA (-3.0%) was the sector's weakest performer.

Participation across the sector was broad, with 28 of 34 names closing higher. The cap-weighted sector rose +0.6%, while the equal-weighted version gained +0.8% across the 34 tracked companies. Because the equal-weighted measure outpaced the cap-weighted index, smaller and mid-sized staples did more of the heavy lifting on the day than the sector's largest constituents.

Inside XLP, EasyAlpha grades 99.6% of the fund's portfolio against industry peers. Currently, 44.1% of that graded weight sits in companies graded A or B. Historically, companies graded A or B have demonstrated stronger fundamentals and carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than those graded D or E. With more than half of the fund's holdings landing in average or lower grades, the underlying quality of the basket remains mixed even as short-term momentum broadens.
