The Consumer Staples sector saw narrow participation on Tuesday, September 15, as only 29.4% of its member companies advanced and the cap-weighted sector recorded a -0.8% move. The exchange-traded fund Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) closed -0.8%, weighed down by Caseys General Stores Inc (-5.5%) even while 50.3% of the fund's graded holdings carry A or B quality grades relative to industry peers. The retreat coincided with a wider market pullback as US equities slipped alongside higher oil prices and bond yields, on a session where 2 of the 11 sectors rose.

Equal-weighted performance lagged capitalization-weighted results, with the equal-weighted sector recording a -1.0% move. That gap indicates that the sector's largest constituents helped soften losses that were steeper among medium and smaller firms. Within the group, performance diverged sharply. Kroger Company (+2.2%) led the gainers, supported by budget-conscious grocery demand after reporting strong growth in store-brand sales. Packaged foods peer The Kraft Heinz Company (+1.9%) also finished higher.

On the downside, Caseys General Stores Inc (-5.5%) was the sector's steepest decliner, extending a retreat following previous quarterly results that showed softer same-store fuel and grocery volumes. Elsewhere in retail staples, Walmart continued expanding its footprint with plans for smaller-format grocery locations in Florida, while retail analysis pointed to Target's comparable sales momentum relative to Walmart.

At $83.73, XLP stands -2.7% over the past month. Across longer spans, the fund has moved -1.1% over the past six months and stands +5.5% over the past twelve months, maintaining positive returns over the full year despite the group's recent monthly weakness.

How grades work

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
