On Thursday, September 10, breadth was weak across Materials, with 16.7% of its companies advancing. The cap-weighted sector finished at -1.4%, while an equal-weighted measure of the same stocks was -0.9%, showing that the largest names accounted for the majority of the decline. The primary vehicle for tracking the group, Materials Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLB), an exchange-traded fund, closed -1.2% at $50.77. The move was dragged down by Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (-6.6%) after copper prices retreated 3.1% from record levels following reports that the White House delayed a decision on proposed tariffs for refined copper imports.
Macroeconomic pressure added to the commodity retreat. Headline inflation readings weighed on equities following a hotter-than-expected August producer price index report. At the same time, rate concerns deepened as crude oil climbed above $100 a barrel. Materials led declines across the market on a session where 2 of the 11 sectors rose.
Internal performance showed a split between raw commodity producers and packaging firms. While mining equities tumbled, select packaging and chemical companies held gains. Packaging Corp of America (+2.3%) paced the advancers, followed by Dow Inc (+0.8%), though our sources show no company-specific catalysts reported for their moves. That divergence kept equal-weighted performance ahead of the cap-weighted sector. In adjacent industrial supply chains, domestic manufacturers continued expanding physical capacity, including an expanded solar manufacturing facility in New Mexico.
EasyAlpha grades 83.8% of the holdings in Materials Select Sector SPDR Fund against their industry peers. Within that graded group, 41.2% earn an A or B quality grade. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. That quality profile shapes the fund's $8.8 billion portfolio, which provides broad sector exposure at an annual expense ratio of 0.08%.
The session adds to recent weakness for the sector. Over the past month, XLB is -4.6%, and it is -2.8% over the past one hundred sessions. Over longer horizons, the fund is +2.2% over the past six months, though it remains -44.0% over the past twelve months.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
