  • Our read: EasyAlpha grades CoStar Group Inc E, placing it in the weakest tier of its real estate peers as solid growth contends with an eroding price trend, contrasting with Wall Street where 57.1% of analysts rate the stock a buy.
  • The day: Shares fell 14.0% to close at $27.54 after weak net new bookings overshadowed quarterly earnings that topped forecasts.
  • Watching: Whether the price holds above its 52-week low of $25.89, which sits 6.4% below the current close.

The stock dropped sharply on Wednesday, finishing at $27.54 on trading volume that reached 3.3x its 20-session average. The decline marked the company's second-largest daily drop over the past year. The selloff followed third-quarter financial results where weak net new bookings overshadowed profit that surpassed expectations. Although operating results and earnings exceeded targets, concerns over slowing commercial momentum triggered an immediate selloff.

Alongside its earnings, the company announced an agreement to acquire aerial imagery provider Vexcel Group for approximately $730 million in cash. Even though management raised its full-year guidance, the weaker bookings trajectory weighed heavily on investor sentiment. Following the quarterly report, analysts moved to lower their price targets on the shares.

CoStar entered Wednesday's session carrying EasyAlpha's lowest quality grade of E relative to its industry peers. While the business retains relative momentum in growth, its most prominent vulnerability remains price trend. The day's tumble pushed the stock down 62.0% from its 52-week peak, leaving the shares -59.0% so far this year.

The drop highlights the tension between analyst optimism and underlying fundamentals. Wall Street has maintained an average price target of $37.65, which implies a 36.7% premium over Wednesday's closing level. Yet the valuation offers little margin of safety when execution stumbles. CoStar trades at a trailing price-to-earnings ratio of 177.8 alongside a slim profit margin of 2.1%. Historically, companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals and have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. When subscription momentum falters for a business priced at such a multiple, the market rarely waits for a turnaround.

How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
