The Energy sector faced broad selling on Wednesday, September 16, with just 10.0% of its member stocks advancing. The exchange-traded fund Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) closed -2.8%, driven lower by upstream producers even as a handful of refiners gained ground. Only 20.3% of the fund's graded weight sits in companies graded A or B against their industry peers. The decline followed an unexpectedly large build in U.S. crude inventories that reversed oil's recent rally, combined with broader market selling after the Federal Reserve raised interest rates by a quarter point.
Upstream oil and gas producers absorbed the sharpest pressure during the session. Diamondback Energy Inc (-8.0%) dropped the most inside the fund, though our sources show no company-specific news or reported driver for the move. Broader energy shares retreated as crude prices softened, with Brent crude falling 2.7% amid renewed concerns over economic activity and fuel demand. Cap-weighted performance for the sector finished -3.0%, while an equal-weighted measure finished -3.3%, indicating that selling was widespread across smaller and mid-sized producers rather than confined to the largest integrated operators.
A narrow pocket of strength emerged in downstream refining, preventing deeper declines for the broader fund. Valero Energy Corporation (+1.6%) and Marathon Petroleum Corp (+0.8%) managed to advance, continuing a strong stretch for refiners where Valero has tracked toward one of its best annual performances. Even so, because refiners represent only a modest fraction of the sector, their gains could not offset the broader downturn across exploration, production, and equipment providers.
The retreat occurred on a session when 3 of the 11 sectors rose, making energy one of the primary drags on the broader market. Despite the day's weakness, XLE shows +2.4% over the past month and +9.7% over six months, supported by earlier commodity gains. Over a longer timeframe, however, XLE sits at -28.6% over the past twelve months.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
