The Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund trading under ticker XLI, closed -0.9% on Wednesday, October 14 as heavyweights weighed on the sector. EasyAlpha grades the stocks in Industrials against their industry peers, and only 33.0% of the fund's graded holdings sit in companies graded A or B. Breadth stayed negative across the group, with 46.8% of sector members advancing. The cap-weighted sector finished -0.8% while the equal-weighted group stood at -0.4%, indicating that larger holdings drove the day's decline. Defense contractors pushed upward, led by Lockheed Martin Corporation at +3.6% and Northrop Grumman Corporation at +2.9%, while Generac Holdings Inc closed -7.6%. Defense shares advanced after an analyst upgrade highlighted missile demand, but those gains could not overcome wider market pressure as hotter inflation data spurred broad equity selling.

Aerospace and defense provided the primary counterweight to the retreat. Lockheed Martin gained ground after an upgrade to Buy underscored accelerating demand for tactical missiles and the replenishment of Patriot interceptors. The upgrade built on momentum from an agreement announced a day earlier to expand solid-rocket-motor production for multiple missile systems. Northrop Grumman advanced alongside the defense sector ahead of its scheduled third-quarter financial results. Sypris Electronics received a follow-on award for Navy electronic warfare equipment, and Leonardo DRS was selected for an Army thermal imaging development program.

At the other end of the sector, Generac Holdings Inc recorded the group's sharpest decline. The company issued a routine announcement scheduling third-quarter financial results for late October, but our sources show no negative corporate developments behind the fall. Instead, the stock retreated alongside the wider market as hotter inflation data and rising Treasury yields drove a broad equity selloff.

The broader market environment offered little help, as 3 of the 11 sectors rose. For investors accessing the group through XLI, the exchange-traded fund finished the day at $167.07. Over a longer horizon, the fund stands at -2.7% across the past 100 sessions.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
