EasyAlpha grades companies against their industry peers, with 41.0% of the sector's graded weight landing in the top A or B quality tiers. On Tuesday, October 13, breadth was positive across the group as 66.0% of sector stocks advanced, helping the equal-weighted sector post +0.5%. Yet the cap-weighted Consumer Discretionary sector finished -0.1%, held back because its largest holdings failed to match that participation. The Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund tracking the sector under ticker XLY, closed the session +0.1% at $112.37. Across the sector, individual movers responded to company announcements, with product launches and store openings lifting gainers while quarterly sales updates weighed on restaurants.

The sharpest drag came from restaurants, where Domino's Pizza Inc Common Stock finished -4.8%. In its quarterly financial release, the pizza chain recorded third-quarter domestic same-store sales growth of 0.3% and international growth of 0.2%. The company forecast muted annual same-store sales as competition and cautious consumer demand weighed on results.

In contrast, specialty products and casual dining provided upward momentum. Garmin Ltd paced sector gainers at +3.7% after unveiling a third-generation luxury smartwatch lineup with six models starting at $2,500, alongside delivering its 1,000th cockpit retrofit to the U.S. Army. Meanwhile, Darden Restaurants Inc delivered +3.0%, and off-price apparel retailer Ross Stores opened 51 new stores to expand its footprint.

The mixed performance unfolded on a day when 4 of the 11 sectors rose across the wider market. While equal-weight outperformance showed that mid-sized and specialized consumer companies found buyers on Tuesday, October 13, the sector continues to wrestle with longer-term headwinds. Over extended windows, XLY stands at -0.4% over the past month and -5.3% over the past 100 sessions, leaving multi-month performance in negative territory.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
