On Thursday, August 27, the Information Technology sector rose +3.4%, lifted by strong quarterly earnings reports from enterprise software and semiconductor companies. As The Associated Press reported, technology shares rallied across Wall Street after multiple industry leaders signaled accelerating corporate spending on artificial intelligence products. Software maker Salesforce stood at the center of the advance after reporting record quarterly financial results alongside an increased full-year revenue outlook, according to The Associated Press.

That report propelled Salesforce.com Inc (+22.6%) to the top of the sector. Strength extended across enterprise cloud and security peers, where Crowdstrike Holdings Inc (+20.5%) also recorded sharp gains. Broader sentiment across the sector drew additional support from the semiconductor industry, where NVIDIA Investor Relations reported quarterly revenue of $96.2 billion, representing a 106% increase over the previous year. The results reinforced market confidence in sustained hardware demand, easily overcoming narrow pullbacks such as HP Inc (-2.9%).

Market participation was broad throughout the session, with 59 of 74 finishing higher. The sector's cap-weighted gain of +3.4% exceeded its equal-weighted return of +2.7%, indicating that the largest technology firms drove the bulk of the advance. Over the past month, the fund has gained +13.2%.

That heavy weighting toward mega-cap leadership directly shapes returns for the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund trading under the ticker XLK. The fund rose +3.2% to close at $188.61 on Thursday, August 27, reflecting how strong earnings momentum among top holdings can lift the entire basket across its 74 member companies.

  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
